MadDev

MadDev is a small, security-oriented studio whose entire public catalog is presently anchored by Buttercup, a free, open-source password manager built for users who want transparent encryption without vendor lock-in. Written in JavaScript and distributed under GPL-3.0, Buttercup stores credentials in AES-256 encrypted vaults that can live locally or sync through mainstream clouds such as Dropbox, Google Drive, WebDAV and Nextcloud; a command-line core lets power users script imports from CSV, 1Password, KeePass or LastPass, while desktop clients for Windows, macOS and Linux, mobile apps for iOS and Android, and browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari provide the same unified interface everywhere. Typical use cases range from individuals replacing browser-saved passwords with a single master passphrase, to families sharing Netflix or banking logins through nested groups, to freelancers who isolate client credentials in separate archives and auto-fill them only when needed. Because the codebase is public, security researchers can audit the crypto flow, and third-party wrappers have already appeared for Node-based DevOps pipelines that need headless secret retrieval. Although MadDev currently offers only this one title, the project’s modular architecture hints at future utilities around file or note encryption that would follow the same cross-platform, zero-knowledge philosophy.
